The Fall of American Journalism
No one could have predicted that the integrity and objectivity of news reporting would ever be jeopardized by media entities’ unfettered willingness to promote and influence their own ideas and opinions rather than report and produce news and information. The degree to which writers and reporters are plagiarizing and attaching their names to reports and stories that they did not create is truly unprecedented. Indeed, there was a time when we could rely on journalists to report and write in ways that allowed us the space to make our own informed judgments. That time has largely gone as media enterprises and news organizations are more overt in their efforts to promote their views across their print, radio, television, and electronic platforms. The goal now seems to be more about shaping people’s opinions rather than simply reporting and letting the audience decide for itself. While diversity of views and perspectives in news reporting is precisely what our democracy needs, we certainly don’t want a media and press industry that lacks journalistic integrity and professionalism.
The expansion and competition for a larger audience may have had unintended consequences as the media companies jockey for position and prominence in the eyes and minds of the public. The proliferation of online media platforms such as blogs and websites have given more voices the space to express fresh views and opinions while also challenging the traditional media outlets whose voices may have become stale. New media tools are providing viewers, listeners, and readers with alternative means for filtering through the growing news distortions and editorial biases that are emanating from news organizations across the spectrum. The distinctions have become pretty obvious when you consider how large the target audience is for media enterprises. For example, local news affiliates seem to do a good job of maintaining the integrity of their broadcast news for their local communities. On the other hand, with cable news organizations you have to distinguish between the hard news reporters and the commentators who tend to have a clear slant to their opinions. As cable news extends around the world and targets a wider range of constituencies, it mixes commentaries, opinions, and news. As journalism continues along its downward spiral, we can only hope that the plethora of media voices and outlets will provide us with enough diversity and filtering to make informed decisions about the events occurring around us.
