The Implementation of Cross-sectoral Collaboration in Public Education
The utilization of cross-sectoral collaboration in public education begins by identifying administrative, managerial, pedagogical, technical, or operational opportunities in classrooms and schools that can be strategically aligned with the routine expertise and resources of nonprofit, private, public, and religious sector enterprises. By partnering with persons and organizations across professions and industries, individual entities should determine that they can potentially achieve a greater bang for their buck while also experiencing improved effectiveness, efficiencies, economies of scale, organizational synergies, cross-utilization of resources, or transferability of skills and assets. Some may discover that the community networks and tailored programs that are customarily employed by local nonprofits can be useful for a school collaborative attempting to solicit external contributions from a community for student programs or extracurricular activities. Some of our larger school districts may realize that certain financial and operational systems that are commonly used in private companies are actually transferable to local school management and operations. As a viable solution to the severe space constraints being confronted by so many schools, administrators should tap into hidden community resources such as the underutilized physical space held by local churches. The kinds of information and resource exchanges that can occur through partnerships across sectors are enormous and extremely promising as we seek to elevate the teaching and learning processes and systems of our public schools.
