Teaching Professionals

As we move toward reestablishing and elevating teaching as a preferred vocation, we must be intent on demanding not only a high level of ethics, integrity, and competence, but also ensuring that increased expectations of teaching professionals are accompanied by market rate salaries and incentive compensation as well as comprehensive and well funded professional development. It will take real courage for us to address the sizable labor market correction that is needed to elevate teacher compensation to a level that is competitive with other professions. Raising the bar for this profession does not mean the implementation of numerous licenses and certifications, rather, it should lead to uniformity in licensure and certification requirements across states.

Teacher training that takes into account the importance of developing instructor strengths in areas such as creativity, adaptability, openness, and fairness is critical for exposing and nurturing the gifts, talents, and abilities of students. Our goals for elementary and secondary education include producing instructors who are able to discern and detect what is appropriate for students, not by imposing their own experiences and biases on the students, but through mature and fair assessments of each child's God-given potential. Windows of learning exist for every child and it continues to be the responsibility of classroom teachers to recognize and nurture these teaching and learning opportunities. The rest of us have the responsibility to make sure we give these professionals adequate space, resources, and respect to fulfill their desire to serve students and their chosen profession.
